IEC 60068 guide for Electronics Test

IEC 60068 is an international standard for the environmental testing of electrotechnical products that is published by the International Electrotechnical Commission.

IEC 60068 is a collection of methods[1] for environmental testing of electronic equipment and products to assess their ability to perform under environmental conditions including extreme cold and dry heat. EN 60068 provides a standard procedure for determining the ability of a specimen to withstand specified severities of non-repetitive or repetitive shocks. The purpose of this test is to reveal mechanical weakness and/or degradation in specified performances, or accumulated damage or degradation caused by shocks.

IEC 60068 offers appropriate severities and prescribes various environmental conditions for measurements and tests, including Temperature, Sunlight, Mechanical shock, Corrosion, atmospheric pressure and so on.

Following is the main test types in IEC 60068 standard and related testing machines:
1. Temperature:Cold, Dry heat, Change of temperature, Damp heat

Machine 1: HD-E708 Rapid-rate thermal cycle chamber--This machine can evaluate the failure mechanical properties of product; normally the temperature ramp rate is less than 20℃/min, which can achieve the real application environment of testing sample by the fastest ramp rate.

Standard: IEC 60068-2-1 Cold, IEC 60068-2-2 Dry heat, IEC 60068-2-14 Change of temperature, IEC 60068-2-78 Damp heat, steady state, IEC 60068-2-39 Combined temperature or temperature/humidity with low air pressure tests

2. Sunlight:Simulated solar radiation at ground level and guidance for solar radiation testing and weathering

Machine: HD-E711 Xenon Weathering Test Chamber--This machine use s a xenon arc lamp that can simulate full sunlight spectrum to reproduce destructive light waves that exist in different environments.

Standard: IEC 60068-2-5 Solar radiation testing,

3. Mechanical shock:Vibration (sinusoidal), Free Fall, Combined climatic (temperature/humidity) and dynamic (vibration/shock) tests, Body strength and impact shock

Machine 1: HD-G826 Electro-dynamic vibration test system-- The system can accurately reproduce the actual vibration on products reliability test, it’s applicable for industries like electronic, automotive, aerospace, aviation, etc.

Standard: IEC 60068-2-6 Vibration (sinusoidal), IEC 60068-2-64 Vibration, broadband random.

Machine 2: HD-A520 Double-wing drop test machine-- During the products handling or transport process, there may be drop/ fall, which results in damage within the products. And the machine simulates the drop/ fall of a finished product to evaluate the damage. Standard test of packaged freights (surfaces, corners, and edges), etc. can be performed efficiently with a high accuracy.

4. Corrosion:Salt mist
Machine: HD-E808 Salt Spray Chamber-- This machine adapted to the surface treatment of various materials, including paint, electroplating, organic and inorganic coating, anode processing, anfirust oil and so on, after these anti-corrosive treatment to test the corrosion resistance of their products.

Standard: IEC 60068-2-11 Test Ka: Salt mist, IEC 60068-2-38 Composite temperature/humidity cyclic test, IEC 60068-2-52 Test Kb: Salt mist, cyclic

5. Atmospheric pressure:Low air pressure
Machine: HD-E714 Altitude Test Chamber-- This machine is able to simulate test environment with various altitude environments. It is especially important for defense and aerospace applications where pressure and vacuum conditions are even more intense application fields.
